Mark your calendars, New Student Convocation is Monday, September 8th at 9:30 a.m. in Room 102/103. Faculty are welcome to bring their classes of first-year and/or second-year students. This event is for any student who could benefit from inspiration to complete his/her program or learn about the resources we have to support them at HWC. No regalia this year, you can wear black or dress professionally. This is just the first event for Welcome Week. Learn more here.
Paul Thompson, C2C Dean, presented at the 2014 University of Chicago Local Workforce Conference on Friday August, 22, 2014. He presented on a panel providing information on training programs with Alan Anderson of YearUp.
College to Careers will host two Business Department Open Houses next week. This is a great opportunity for students to meet faculty (including many new business faculty members) and learn about programs. There will be an evening and afternoon session to accommodate the busy schedules of our students.
HWC adjunct faculty member Craig Yu has been featured in the current issue of New American Paintings. The entry synopsis interviews Craig about his history, his art and his painting practice. Read it here.
Additionally, Alex Bradley Cohen, a former Harold Washington College student who studied with HWC faculty Craig Yu, Michelle Bollinger and Alberto Aguilar before attending the Showhegan School of Painting and Sculpture this past summer is also featured in the same issue of New American Paintings. Next week, Practice / Photography opens in the President’s Gallery. This special exhibition features the photography of HWC students and is part of Stephanie Burke’s tenure project. There will be opening receptions and a release of book by Stephanie of HWC student photography on Thursday, September 4. This is free and open to the HWC community and the public. Stop by between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
George Bickford will be honored by the Center of Economic Progress for his support of the organization. At CEP’s Fundraising Event Counting on Progress, they will present a community partner with the “George Bickford Award.”
Ellen Goldberg recently met with HWC Alumna Rosa Bacio who has transferred to UIC. Rosa has made the Dean’s List at UIC every semester since she graduated. She’s also won numerous scholarship, enough to completely cover her expenses at UIC! Rosa received great support from her advisor Ainka Clepper.
HWC alumna Shannon Brown started at Fisk University this semester. Shannon participated in the HBCU Spring Break Tour in Spring 2014 and received transfer support from Ellen!
HWC Alumna Britiny Cook graduated with her Associate of Science in Spring 2014 from Harold Washington College. She got into UPenn, Cornell, and Stanford and will be transferring to Stanford University this Fall to study Public Policy. Stanford is giving her a full-ride! Britiny thanks advisor Rachel Cabrzynski who helped her get to the finish line! She loved all of her professors, but sends special thanks to Professor Carla Burnett and Professor Erica McCormack.
