Professor Shanina Thomas was awarded the Leo Welch Instructor of the Year Award at the Illinois Community College Faculty Association Teaching and Learning Excellence Conference which was held in Springfield, Illinois on October 27-28, 2016.
Shanina M. Thomas, Adjunct Professor of History and African American Studies at Harold Washington College has been named the 2016 Leo Welch Instructor of the Year by the Illinois Community College Faculty Association (ICCFA). She was honored at the Annual Teaching and Learning Excellence Conference on October 28, 2016, held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Springfield, Illinois.
The ICCFA Award is presented to one Illinois Community College Faculty member on an annual basis. All faculty members (full and part-time) at Illinois Community Colleges are members of the ICCFA and are eligible to nominate candidates for the award.
Professor Thomas is a 1999 graduate of Olive- Harvey College and has served in the capacity of an Adjunct Professor at both Olive- Harvey and Harold Washington Colleges since 2005. She was awarded the prestigious honor Board of Trustees of Community Colleges District # 508 for the County of Cook and the State of Illinois/ City Colleges of Chicago Distinguished Part- Time Professor for 2010-2011. She is a life time member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. In April 2016, Professor Thomas was the recipient of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) Inaugural “40 under 40” award; an award that recognizes outstanding female leaders under the age of 40 working at a Community College. In November 2014, Professor Thomas was named Distinguished Female Faculty Member of the Year by the Lambda Iota Chapter at Olive- Harvey College of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Professor Thomas was also named Employee of The Month- Student Nominated at Harold Washington College in 2014.
The Illinois Community College Faculty Association (ICCFA) is a not-for-profit statewide organization that represents the common interest of all faculty in the public community colleges in Illinois; promotes teaching and learning excellence and professional development; provides a faculty presence on the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB); and informs faculty of issues which affect the 48 public community colleges in Illinois.
