I am often asked by colleagues how did Harold Washington College develop such a strong culture of assessment?
When I ask faculty, it began in 2004 when Dr. Cecilia Lopez came to HWC as our VP and Chief Academic Officer. She helped faculty get started, but then quickly stepped out and let them take charge. There have been some wonderful Assessment Chairs through the years including Professor Michael Heathfield, Professor Jennifer Asimow and currently Professor Carrie Nepstad. The Assessment Committee has members from all disciplines and is focusing on Departmental and Program Assessment along with General Education Assessment as described in the recent Assessment Times. Kudos HWC faculty – the culture of assessment and then using the data to improve teaching and student learning outcomes is stellar! It’s clear that others think the same as many of the HWC assessment team have presented on this work in Illinois, nationally and internationally as well!
